If being sent by airfreight, samples should comply with
IATA regulations.

Samples should be contained within two shock-proof,
watertight containers.

Both the inner and outer containers should be sealed
and disinfected on the outside after closure.

The whole package should be contained within an insulated
box containing 'cool-packs' (or dry ice for probang samples).

Samples other than probangs should be kept as cold as
possible without freezing.

Full details of the origin of each sample must be provided,
together with all relevant epidemiological information which might
assist a diagnosis.

Samples should be sent to the National or International
Reference Laboratory for FMD. Full details of dispatch arrangements
should be notified in advance to the laboratory so that arrangements
can be made to receive the samples.

Samples submitted to the WRL must be sent by airfreight
to London Airport (Heathrow) and must be labelled:
PERISHABLE FRAGILE TO BE COLLECTED AT AIRPORT BY ADDRESSEE
KEEP AT 4°C PATHOLOGICAL MATERIAL OF NO COMMERCIAL VALUE
Notification must be given in advance including the airwaybill
number, the flight number, and the expected date and time of arrival.
