Emergency vaccination

  • Ring vaccination around an epidemic may be performed if 'stamping out' alone proves inadequate to prevent the spread of disease.

  • Several banks of inactivated FMD antigen exist - for example, the International Vaccine Bank, the European Union Antigen Reserve, and the North American Antigen Bank. A number of countries also have their own national antigen reserves.

  • Emergency vaccines usually have a higher antigen payload than routine vaccines in order to induce a more rapid immune response and higher antibody titres. High titres broaden the range of heterologous protection.
