Control and eradication

Control

Individual herd vaccination

  • Individual stock-holders may wish to use vaccination to limit the effects of the disease.

  • Reduces, but does not completely eliminate, the likelihood of an incursion.

  • Reduces the morbidity in adults and the mortality in young stock if the disease enters the herd.

  • Can reduce the severity and duration of the disease on a holding.

  • Should always be combined with good zoosanitary control including:

    • quarantine and vaccination of new animals introduced into the herd

    • an effective barrier to prevent contact with potentially infected wild or domesticated animals in the neighbourhood

    • a high level of hygiene and good management practices on the holding.
