A number of small mammals have been shown to be susceptible to infection
with FMD virus by contact exposure and to develop clinical signs. These
include both the European and African hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus
and Atelerix pruneri hindei). In Norfolk, England, FMD infection
has been confirmed in hedgehogs captured on holdings where there were
outbreaks involving cattle. Some of the hedgehogs had vesicular lesions
on the tongue, snout and feet. Under experimental conditions it has been
shown that FMD virus can cause a fatal infection in hedgehogs.
