Deer and antelopes may be infected naturally. In experiments at the FAO/OIE
World Reference Laboratory for FMD at Pirbright, England, in which five
different species of deer (red, fallow, roe, muntjac and sika) were infected
by natural routes the disease was particularly severe in roe and muntjac,
several of which died. In both species vesicular lesions occurred in the
mouth and commonly on all four feet, especially on the interdigital coronary
band and bulbs of the heels. The appearance and distribution of lesions
was similar to those in sheep. Clinical disease, however, was mild or
inapparent in red, fallow, and sika deer.
