Among game animals in Africa clinical FMD has been described as severe
in impala (Aepyceros melampus). Outbreaks involving this species
have been recorded on several occasions in the Kruger National Park, Republic
of South Africa. The sites where lesions are most commonly seen are the
dental pad, the dorsum of the tongue and the bulbs of the heels. Lesions
have also been observed on the upper and lower lips, the nostrils, the
hard palate and the lower jaw. The dental pad is the site most often involved.
Foot lesions cause a severe lameness and the horny tissue of the digits
may be lost. The mortality rate among young animals may be high.
