Foot and mouth disease: Clinical Disease and Diagnosis |
Ageing of Lesions |
|
Contents |
In the event of the occurrence of an outbreak of FMD a thorough clinical investigation of the affected herd or flock should be undertaken to establish the age of the lesions present, particularly the oldest. Obtaining these data is essential to establish a full history of the case and for epidemiological investigations aimed at identifying the origin of infection. The ageing of lesions and determination of the number and species of animals affected also provides a basis for an assessment of the duration and estimated amount of virus excretion. These, in turn, can be used as input parameters in computer programs to predict the risk of further spread.
