Collection of Samples - Introduction

The material of choice for laboratory diagnosis of FMD is epithelium from unruptured and recently ruptured vesicles. Vesicular fluid can also be used. If vesicular material is not available, other samples may be diagnostically useful. However, it is important to emphasise that vesicular material is the most important sample to collect whenever possible.

When submitting samples for FMD diagnosis it is important to provide all relevant epidemiological information. The information required by the OIE/FAO WRL for FMD is shown on the WRL Field Card.
