The pharynx is the usual site of primary replication of FMD virus. In ruminants the pharynx,
particularly the dorsal soft palate and the cranial oesophagus, are the sites of virus
persistence in the carrier animal. It is therefore possible to isolate FMD virus from
oesophagopharyngeal (O/P) fluids under certain circumstances. O/P fluid is rarely the
material of choice for primary diagnosis of FMD and vesicular material should always be
collected if present. As pigs do not become carriers there are no indications for collecting
O/P fluid from this species. The following samples may be submitted from cases of suspected FMD -
