O/P fluid is collected:
• to certify freedom from FMDV infection for the purposes
of international trade.
• in cases where subclinical infection is suspected (particularly, but
not exclusively, in sheep).
• to detect carrier animals, whether vaccinated or not.
• in rare cases, to attempt to isolate virus from animals which might
be in the incubation period of the disease following known contact with
infected animals, personnel or equipment. Nasal swabs can also be used
for this purpose.
