Blood

Isolating the virus

Virus may be isolated from blood only during the period of viraemia which follows replication of FMDV at the site of primary infection. Viraemia is usually fairly short-lived, starting 1-2 days before the first appearance of clinical signs and ending within 3-4 days, accompanied by a rise in serum antibodies. In sheep, where clinical signs can be mild or absent, viraemia can be more prolonged.
