All biological material to be sent to the FAO/OIE WRL for FMD at Pirbright, UK, MUST be transported by AIRFREIGHT to London, Heathrow or London Gatwick.

The outer packaging of the parcel must be clearly labelled with the following information:

    • The name and address of the Institute. The label must indicate that the package contains Animal Pathological Material of no commercial value, and that it is to be collected from the airport by the addressee.

    • The name and telephone number of the person responsible for sending the parcel.

    • Infectious Substance Hazard Label.

    • Flight Number.

    • Air Waybill Number.

    • Dry Ice Label (if appropriate).

BEFORE despatch, the sender must notify the WRL Secretary at Pirbright (FAX +44 1483 232621) of details of the Air Waybill Number, Flight Number and date and time of arrival of the package in the UK.

The Institute freight handlers will 'clear' the package through customs and it will be collected by Institute staff. No commercial freight companies, other than the airline, will be involved.
