Route of Infection

Cattle, sheep and goats are most susceptible to infection by the respiratory route.

Pigs are more susceptible by the oral route.

Cattle are most susceptible to infection by airborne virus because they sample greater volumes of air than do the smaller ruminants.

Infection may enter via abrasions on the skin or mucous membranes.

Mechanical transmission and inoculation by biting insects is considered rare and not of any epidemiological significance.
