Housing

Spread of FMD within groups of susceptible livestock housed together is usually very rapid (within 2 days).

However, spread between animal houses by aerosol virus in the absence of mechanical transmission by farm personnel can be delayed or prevented. Plumes of aerosol virus can be disrupted by artificial ventilation.

Pigs housed on concrete develop severe lesions of FMD at sites of abraded skin.
