Host/Virus Interaction

Transmission of FMD

Period of Infectivity

Infectivity is related to overall excretion of virus, most of which is shed at around the onset of clinical signs.

Milk and semen can be contaminated with FMD virus for up to 4 days before the development of clinical signs.

Virus output declines as immunity develops (Donaldson and Kitching, 1989).
