Meat, offal. semen, milk and ova from infected animals can carry virus to susceptible
animals.
Conditions used to preserve these products can also preserve live FMD virus. However,
the reduction in pH of meat at post mortem due to accumulation of lactic acid is usually
sufficient to kill FMD virus. There is no change of pH in the glands and bone marrow,
and the virus will persist between 4ºC or -20ºC.
FMD virus will survive in milk, and deep frozen semen and ova.
