Host/Virus Interaction

Transmission of FMD

Aerosol

Infected animals produce large amounts of virus as aerosols; cattle, sheep and goats may exhale up to 5.2 log10 TCID50 of virus per day, but pigs, producing up to 8.6 log10 TCID50 per day - 3000 times more - represent a significantly greater source of airborne infectious capability.

Virus transport in aerosols (Donaldson, 1979; Gloster, 1982) can occur over short and long distances according to weather conditions and the characteristics of virus survival and dissemination. Transmission of aerosol virus depends on the stability of the virus plume.
