The history of FMD control within Europe, and within the European Union (EU) in
particular, is an important example of how FMD can be controlled. In this example,
over a period of some 25 years, Europe went from being an endemic area to being
FMD-free through the successive adoption of appropriate control strategies implemented
at national and supranational levels.
