Disposal by burial is the method of choice. Approval of
the local water authority must always be obtained before burial. The site
of the burial pit must be accurately recorded on a large-scale map of
the area which must be stored at the Regional Veterinary Office.
Recommended pit dimensions for 20 adult bovine carcasses or 60 pig/sheep carcasses are:
6 x 3 x 4 metres deep.
Before burial, the abdomen of carcasses must be opened using an appropriate tool to
ensure that there is no build up of gases post mortem.
Burial sites should be fenced off to prevent grazing before re-stocking
is allowed.
