The aim of disposal is to destroy carcasses in a way that
minimises the possibility of further spread of disease. Wherever possible,
disposal should be by burial on the IP.
This may not be possible:
• due to a high water table
• lack of space
• inappropriate soil conditions
• danger of contaminating water supplies
In these circumstances alternative arrangements must be made to destroy carcasses by:
• cremation
• rendering
Only if all possible methods of disposal on the IP have been eliminated
should consideration be given to destruction off site. If this is the
only option available, animals should be slaughtered on the IP and then
transported to the place of disposal in sealed, water-tight containers.
These should travel by an approved route to a destruction point within
the controlled area, usually under escort.
