Preliminary spraying should start as soon as the virus source
is eliminated. The aim is to minimise further spread of virus during the
clean up operation. The whole environment of the farm should be sprayed
with disinfectant, preferably a solution of soda in detergent. Power sprayers
should be used in preference to hand-sprayers. Spraying should encompass:
• all animal houses
• all yards or holding areas
• the area where animals were slaughtered, if not slaughtered in a building
• feedstores and stored food and forage
• slurry pits or manure heaps
• equipment
• milking equipment, bulk tanks
