FMD can only be controlled by a thorough understanding of the epidemiology of the
disease so that intervention is targeted effectively. This applies to decisions made at
the field level in terms of containment and elimination strategies on the farm, and at
the national level in terms of decisions regarding regionalisation and the use or not of
emergency vaccination.
Contingency plans for eradication of FMD in FMD-free countries usually include sending an
epidemiological team into the field. Epidemiological monitoring is required of farms
exposed to risk due to links with an infected premises and there is sometimes a need for
post-epidemic surveillance before zoosanitary control measures can be lifted.
