Control of Animal Movement

Movement of infected animals is the most common method of transmission of FMD. Establishing movement control zones is an essential element of eradicating FMD. Likewise, controlling movement of susceptible animals is crucial to the success of an FMD control programme by preventing the introduction of new sources of virus. Airborne spread of FMD virus which cannot be prevented by movement controls is only possible under certain, well-defined, meteorological and epidemiological conditions. Control of the effects of airborne transmission can be achieved by identifying 'at risk' areas and either depopulating susceptible stock or limiting their movement.

The type of movement controls put in place and the method of their enforcement depends on the local conditions.

The most important factors to consider are:

• Geographical conditions
• Husbandry systems
• Meteorological conditions
• Status of the country or zone
• Status of neighbouring country or zone
• Species of domestic livestock present
• Species of wildlife susceptible to FMD
