An example of profiling of field isolates of FMDV by a panel of anti-O1 Swiss (1965) monoclonal antibodies (MAbs). The virus O1 BFS 1860 is virtually identical to the O1 Swiss reference virus and so gives almost 100% reactivity with all the MAbs. The early isolate from Kuwait (KUW 4/88) has a different pattern of reactivity to O1 BFS but a similar pattern to the other isolates from Kuwait from the same year (KUW 7-10/88). This would suggest that the outbreaks are probably caused by the same virus strain and that little antigenic variation has so far occurred during the spread of the disease. The isolates from Jordan and Bahrain (JOR 1/88 and BAR 5/88) also show differences from the reference strain O1 BFS 1860, and have a similar profile to the Kuwait isolates, suggesting a common origin. |
