Constructing a 'Time-line' for an Outbreak of FMD |
|
Sentinel Zone This an area adjacent to the border where movement of
animals is not permitted and where periodic clinical and serological
surveys are carried out to confirm freedom from FMD. Animal Free Zone Not all buffer zones have an animal-free zone. Where present,
this is a narrow strip of land in which it is not permitted to keep
or graze animals. The presence of this zone makes it easier to monitor
control of movement across the border. Border No movement of animals permitted across the border except
at approved checkpoints under controlled conditions. Movement control
will be more effective if the border is fenced. Vaccination Zone Susceptible animals are vaccinated on a regular basis using a vaccine of proven quality and potency. Cattle are always vaccinated, normally twice a year. Sheep are usually vaccinated. It is not usual to vaccinate
pigs due to their high rate of turnover. |
