Exotic FMD viruses originating from the Near East, blocked by the buffer zone |
A buffer zone between Turkey and the rest of Europe was effective in preventing the introduction of Asian and African strains of FMD from the 1960s until 1989 when the zone was temporarily abolished. The buffer zone involved vaccination (for all except SAT1), movement controls and physical borders in many, but not all areas. |
